A new software from Sweden brings a miraculous capability: Compressing high-resolution images into an incredibly minimal memory size.
In the race to increase pixel count for mobile phones, manufacturers have overlooked (or deliberately ignored) an important issue: How to have enough memory to process and store these images.
Swedish software company Scalado believes it has “solved” this problem with a new software that, according to the company, can reduce memory consumption by up to … 50 times.

Scalado affectionately names its product CAPS, short for “Camera Application Processing Solution.” According to its advertisements, compared to existing phone models, this application requires significantly less memory and processes images much faster.
For example, a current 2MP camera needs at least 12 MB of free memory, whereas with CAPS, it only requires 0.44 MB. Despite this reduction, image quality remains unaffected. Additionally, CAPS processes images 20 times faster than current models.
This means that with CAPS, phones do not need to have excessively large memory. Manufacturers will spend less on phone memory, which will help customers save a considerable amount when purchasing devices.
Scalado claims that CAPS could lower the production cost of a phone by up to $3.50 – a significant amount in today’s fiercely competitive market. However, this presents a nightmare scenario for memory card manufacturers.
CAPS can operate on both smartphone operating systems: Symbian and Windows Mobile 5.0.
