The International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned over the weekend about the emergence of a new online email scam, where emails are spoofed to appear as if they are sent from the organization itself.
An IMF official stated that there has been a significant increase in the number of such emails targeting newly migrated individuals and residents living in various cities across the United States.
The IMF has notified U.S. authorities regarding this issue.
This is indeed a phishing attack in which the IMF has become a victim of identity theft aimed at deceiving users into providing personal financial information. Those who receive such emails are requested to visit a fake IMF website, where they are prompted to enter personal details.
“The International Monetary Fund does not send any emails or messages to individuals,” the IMF asserted in a statement. “The IMF does not operate through agents or endorse the activities of any bank, financial institution, individual, or public agency.”
