The aftertaste of a blazing summer has not yet ended in Western Europe, as countries like Spain and France are experiencing an unusually warm autumn.
In the Riviera region along the Mediterranean coast of France, tourists can still comfortably sunbathe on sandy beaches, enjoy sun-soaked terraces, and swim in pleasantly warm waters.
Western Europe is experiencing an unusually mild October.
“At the end of October, the weather is usually cool, and by All Saints’ Day, it often rains, but this year is different,” said tourist Rose-Marie Martini.
Western Europe is experiencing an unusually mild October following a record hot summer that caused numerous wildfires and droughts.
Continuous heatwaves have scorched Europe, heightening concerns about the impacts of climate change on agricultural and industrial activities.
“2022 is the hottest year on record,” stated Frederic Nathan, a meteorologist from the French Meteorological Agency. “Every year sees dozens of heat records, and they show no signs of decreasing, a typical indication of climate change.”
On Thursday, Spain recorded unusual warm weather, with some areas experiencing temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius. The country’s meteorological agency announced this is the hottest October ever recorded.
In the Basque Country, in Northern Spain, which typically has a cooler climate, temperatures also hovered around 30 degrees Celsius. Residents of the coastal city of San Sebastián clearly feel that the summer atmosphere has not yet faded.
“We are grateful for the weather. It’s good for business,” shared waiter Carlos Cruz.
Beach resorts across France continue to operate as the unusually warm weather attracts throngs of tourists.
“This is an endless summer,” said Rene Colomban, head of the Nice beach operators’ association. “We will stay open as long as the weather permits.”
