On Friday, November 11, China reported a new outbreak of avian influenza in Hubei Province. This marks the eighth outbreak in the country within just one month. Health officials are also testing a patient suspected of being infected with avian influenza.
The most recent cases in Jingshan County, Hubei Province, indicate that the virus is spreading. Premier Wen Jiabao warned last week that China is facing an “extremely serious situation.”
Meanwhile, a poultry farmer in the outbreak area of Liaoning Province was hospitalized on November 12 due to a high fever of 102 degrees Fahrenheit and is being tested for avian influenza. This woman is among 121 patients in Heishan County who have fever and symptoms similar to influenza. Health officials have confirmed that 120 individuals do not have avian influenza.
As of now, there have been four suspected cases of avian influenza in China that are under investigation. Officials state that 2,500 poultry have died from H5N1, and they are culling 30,000 birds to prevent the spread of the disease.
