After installing Office, Word typically defaults to using automatic numbering and bullet points. This means that when a line starts with a character or number (-, *, 1, I, b,…) and you press Enter to move to the next line, MS Word will automatically switch to the mode of auto-filling the bullet or number for that line.
To disable automatic bullet or numbering:
1. Go to ToolsAutoCorrect Options…
2. A dialog box will appear, select the AutoFormat tab
Uncheck the options (*):
– * Automatic bulleted lists.
– * Other paragraph styles.
3. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab
Uncheck the options (*):
– * Automatic bulleted lists.
– * Automatic numbered lists.
4. Click the OK button to finish
At this point, when a line starts with a character or number (-, *, 1, I, b,…) and you press Enter to move to the next line, MS Word will no longer switch to the automatic bullet or numbering mode but will treat it as a character.
