Motorola, the American phone manufacturer, is developing a new handheld device called the “courteous phone” designed to enhance driving safety.
This innovative phone can be integrated with the car’s computer system to analyze driving conditions and determine whether to allow the driver to answer incoming calls, send calls to voicemail, or even contact emergency services at 911. For instance, as soon as the driver enters the vehicle, the phone automatically switches to speaker mode, enabling hands-free conversation without needing to hold the phone. When driving at a moderate speed, the phone will “filter” unnecessary calls that the driver has pre-sorted. If the vehicle encounters a complex situation, such as needing to brake suddenly or navigate a sharp turn, the phone will automatically send incoming calls to voicemail. In emergencies, like airbag deployment, the phone will dial 911 automatically, allowing the driver to request assistance.
