Thirteen-year-old Lukas Wahangara from Indonesia has recently been freed from a “shackle” around his neck – a thyroid tumor nearly the size of a human head. He is recovering quickly after surgery.
The enormous tumor, measuring approximately 20 cm in diameter, caused Wahangara difficulty breathing and insomnia. Now, “The patient has started to speak,” reported Goh Yau Hong, a member of the surgical team. Six members of the surgical team successfully removed the tumor in a 10-hour operation on November 28 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore. It is anticipated that the patient will be able to return home next week.
The total cost of the surgery was $11,900, covered by a fundraising initiative from a church in Singapore.
