Recently, Sohu published a rather unusual story about a group of stray cats gathering “high” in front of a woman’s house.
The girl shared: “Every summer, the weather is both hot and filled with mosquitoes. Especially at night, they buzz around my ears, which is extremely annoying. A friend suggested I grow catnip, which has a strong scent that helps repel insects. I tried it, but an unexpected incident occurred.”
Accordingly, the homeowner planted a row of catnip around her gate. The next day, as soon as she opened the door, she was shocked to see a army of cats sprawled out in front of her house. Each one was lying motionless with half-closed eyes. The girl panicked and quickly called the police.

After the authorities arrived, they could not determine the cause. They had to call in animal experts to resolve the situation. It turned out these “furry friends” were not sick at all; they were simply temporarily hypnotized.

It is known that the plant the homeowner grew is catmint. When the “four-legged friends” catch a whiff of its scent, they flock to the catnip to indulge. Experts explain that when cats consume this herb, they experience hallucinations for a varying amount of time depending on the quantity ingested. During this time, pets exhibit involuntary actions that their brains cannot control. For example, they may sleep deeply for hours on end or become overly excited and experience hallucinations.

According to pet specialists, catnip is a nutritious food beneficial for cats, as long as it is not used in excess to avoid side effects; this herb does not negatively impact the health of pets. “I was startled, thinking something had happened to them. Fortunately, they are all safe. This is the first time I learned that cats can also get high from herbs, haha,” the girl laughed as she shared.
The images of the “furry bosses” getting “high” on catnip quickly went viral on social media. They attracted a lot of interactions from netizens, who couldn’t help but laugh at their dazed expressions. Additionally, some opinions suggested that we should not grow this herb too much, as excessive use could deplete the energy of our little friends.
