Thousands of dead birds scattered across a cemetery in Bali, Indonesia, after heavy rain on September 9, creating a disturbing scene.
Local authorities initially believed that the cause of the mass bird deaths was due to the rain.
Many believe that harsh weather is the cause of the birds’ deaths.
“There could be a lot of acid in the rain. That may have caused the birds to fall,” said a spokesperson for the Indonesian Natural Conservation Center (BKSDA) on September 10.
Made Santiarka, a spokesperson for the veterinary department in Gianyar, also suggested that harsh weather was responsible for the birds’ deaths.
However, a new hypothesis has emerged regarding pesticides. According to BKSDA representatives, the birds may have died from pesticide poisoning.
Bali officials are still investigating the incident.
A local official mentioned that this is not the first occurrence of such an event in the area. During the rainy season, many bird species seek shelter by hiding under tamarind trees. However, heavy rain can hinder their ability to fly due to their feathers being soaked.
“But the tamarind leaves are relatively small, so they cannot cover most of the birds’ bodies during heavy rains,” he added.
