EarthCam, one of the leading companies in timelapse camera systems, has released a timelapse video documenting two decades of rescue, recovery, and rebuilding efforts at the World Trade Center in New York.
The 9/11 attacks that shocked the United States took place on September 11, 2001. Two hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, leading to their collapse within one hour and forty-two minutes after impact. The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,996 people and injured over 6,000 others.

After the area was cleared, a new World Trade Center tower was planned and constructed on the same site as the original Twin Towers and opened on November 3, 2014.
The timelapse video above is the longest timelapse project in EarthCam’s history and includes footage that the company claims has never been released before, spanning over two decades. EarthCam previously released a 10-year timelapse showcasing the construction of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in 2014.
EarthCam mentioned that they installed cameras in 2001, just days after the attacks occurred, to live stream the mission to rescue those who were missing.
The company stated that as the recovery process began to take shape, they researched and developed new robotic camera technology that they believed was necessary to capture the 16-acre site in the highest possible resolution.
Since that time, EarthCam’s system has regularly captured images and panoramic views of the area every few minutes, documenting the transformation of downtown Manhattan from over 100 perspectives continuously for 20 years. The company reported that the project has taken over 13.3 million photographs.

“This is an emotional milestone for EarthCam, as the history of our company is intertwined with this site,” said Brian Cury, CEO and Founder of EarthCam: “We are grateful to our many partners, friends, and the dedicated team at EarthCam who have driven this process for 20 years to bring this historical footage to the world.”
