Sony BMG Music Entertainment and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have announced the discovery of a new security risk in Sony’s CD products.
The new risk is related to the copy protection software integrated into Sony CDs, created by SunnComm Technologies. The software activates automatically when the CD is inserted into a computer. This security flaw can allow hackers to gain control of the computer and run malicious software on the system.
The security issue affects many types of Sony CDs beyond the batch of 4.7 million discs that the company recalled last month.
The root of the problem lies in the CD copy protection technology developed by First 4 Internet (UK). Sony has utilized this technology across a wide range of its CDs, which has allowed hackers to exploit vulnerabilities in the copy protection system and infiltrate a significant number of computers in recent times.
Currently, a patch for this vulnerability has been announced by Sony and is available on the company’s website.
