With the project “Research and Manufacturing of Two Automatic Devices Controlled by PLC for Welding Straight and Round Motorcycle Exhaust Pipes”, the author group from Thang Long Mechanical Company has saved the company 500-600 million VND per year since 2004.
The two mentioned devices are the TIG and MAG welding machines. Thanks to the PLC controller, they operate like an automatic welding robot, enhancing labor productivity and product quality.
These welding machines only take about 2 minutes to weld one exhaust pipe, compared to the previous 3-5 minutes for manual welding.
Additionally, due to automatic welding, the quality of welds is uniform, smooth, and better. The defect rate of welds has decreased to less than 1%, while the defect rate for manual welding is approximately 10%. It is known that these devices are currently used for welding exhaust pipes supplied to Honda Vietnam and other motorcycle assembly companies.
The second project awarded is “Research and Manufacturing of a Three-Dimensional Cutting Force Sensor for Turning Operations.”
According to engineer Dao Viet Dung, one of the three authors from the Aerodynamics-Dynamics Laboratory at the Rocket Institute, the successful creation of this sensor greatly aids in the research and investigation of the dynamics of large-power machine tools, thereby finding improvement measures to enhance productivity.
The Youth Scientific and Technological Award was first presented in 1991. To date, there have been 664 scientific research projects and technical solutions from youth across the country participating in the award. The award is presented to authors aged 40 and under, aiming to encourage the youth nationwide to actively study and innovate, successfully implementing the national modernization and industrialization efforts. |
The sensor is directly mounted on large power lathes, easy to operate, disassemble, and does not affect the machine’s operation. It measures the forces acting on the cutting tool during the turning process, including axial force, normal force, and tangential force, with an error margin of less than 1.5%.
The cost of manufacturing this type of sensor is only one-tenth the price of purchasing similar devices from foreign companies due to the lack of mass production.
Furthermore, this success serves as a foundation for the group to continue researching and developing sensors for measuring axial forces and eccentric forces in rocket engines, as well as smarter sensors for controlling machine tools.
The third project awarded is “Research, Manufacturing, and Implementation of a Semi-Automatic Assembly System for Artillery Ignition Devices.”
With this project, the author group at Z21 Chemical Company, under the General Department of Defense Industry, has helped the company save 300 million VND by not having to import similar equipment.
The advantage of this project is ensuring safety in fire prevention for personnel and equipment, increasing labor productivity by 50-60 times, and reducing the scrap rate to five times below the regulations.
The Youth Scientific and Technological Award is given for outstanding projects in science or technology.
The three mentioned awards are all technical awards. Each award is worth 7 million VND.
This year, the organizing committee did not select a deserving project for the outstanding scientific award.
