“Seaweed City” with 200 different species of fish |
Dutch scientists have recently discovered an underwater mountain range teeming with hundreds of different species in the Caribbean Sea.
During a two-week survey dive, researchers uncovered “a seaweed city” boasting 200 different species of fish, surpassing the 150 previously recorded. Notably, they identified two species of tube blennies, which are extremely rare.
The breathtaking landscape of these vast and stunning seaweed layers astonished everyone involved. At least 12 new marine species have been documented.
However, the dome-shaped coral reefs, which serve as habitats for these organisms, are under threat. Massive oil tankers pose a significant risk to these reefs. The large anchors they drop into the sea often become entangled in the coral, causing devastating destruction.
Scientists hope that the International Maritime Organization will take measures to protect these invaluable treasures for humanity.
This “seaweed city” is located 250 km southeast of Puerto Rico, within the Netherlands Antilles.
