Two tiny-looking helicopters inside the Ghost Cave (LiveScience) |
A cave so large that helicopters can fly inside it has just been discovered in the hills of a rainforest region in South America.
“Cueva del Fantasma” – Spanish for “Ghost Cave” – is spacious enough for two helicopters to maneuver freely inside and land near a towering waterfall.
It is located on the slopes of the Aprada Range in southern Venezuela, one of the most pristine and inaccessible regions in the world. This area, known as the Venezuelan Guiana, is one of the most biodiverse, geologically ancient, and least human-impacted regions on the planet.
This discovery is a geological milestone and represents the first photographic evidence of such a large cave. However, researchers indicate that it is not technically a cave but rather a deep canyon that has collapsed.
Alongside the discovery of the cave, researchers have also identified a new species of frog in the region, scientifically named Colostethus breweri.
