Sương Nguyệt Anh was born on March 8, 1864, in An Bình Đông village, Bến Tre province. Her father was Nguyễn Đình Chiểu – a poet and also her teacher who taught her to read and write in both Han characters and Nôm script.
Sương Nguyệt Anh was also a poet. One of her most famous poems is about the apricot blossom. Therefore, the Doodle illustration honoring Sương Nguyệt Anh on February 1 features a combination of apricot flowers.

Poet Nguyễn Đình Chiểu passed away when Sương Nguyệt Anh was 24 years old. She and her brother took over their father’s school to teach the local people. Later, she moved to Rạch Miễu, Mỹ Tho city, got married, and had a daughter. Two years later, Sương Nguyệt Anh’s husband passed away.
Sương Nguyệt Anh (real name Nguyễn Thị Khuê) became the first female editor-in-chief in Vietnam when she began writing for the Nữ Giới Chung in Saigon under the pen name Sương Nguyệt Anh, which means “Widow Nguyệt Anh.” Many issues of Nữ Giới Chung discussed the role of women in Vietnamese culture and society.
Sương Nguyệt Anh is renowned for her intellect, open-mindedness, and resilience in overcoming adversity. The figure honored by Google Doodle today is a pioneer for female writers and editors in Vietnam, paving the way for future generations. She had relationships with people from all walks of life and treated them with respect.
There are several streets named after Sương Nguyệt Anh in cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, and Vung Tau.
