The U.S. government has announced plans to fully digitize its television broadcasting system, aiming to complete this initiative by the end of 2008.
According to Reuters, draft legislation has been prepared, stipulating that all television programs will need to be completed and converted to comply with this new technology. The deadline for this transition is set for December 31, 2008.
The draft also considers government subsidies allocated for this program. It is reported that the total funding will be around $990 million, designated for purchasing supplementary devices that can be attached to televisions to decode digital signals.
Thanks to these supplementary devices, American households will not need to purchase or upgrade to new-generation televisions. The cost of each device is approximately $60.
