Following Centrino, which expanded wireless networking for laptops, and Viiv, aimed at home entertainment systems, Intel may be preparing to introduce a third brand for enterprise systems.
“We are considering whether to do something in this area“, said Anand Chandrasekher, Vice President of Intel.
While not confirming anything, Chandrasekher reiterated that even before Centrino and Viiv officially launched, Intel had described them as platforms designed to facilitate larger workloads more easily. He then revealed that the new platform will integrate various technological features that they believe will become central in the enterprise environment, such as management capabilities, security, and virtualization.
Launching an independent brand for enterprise systems is a significant step in asserting that Intel is not just a company focused on manufacturing processors, but has transitioned to building platforms that support various computing purposes.
This platform technology from Intel began to emerge from the restructuring of the company by Paul Otellini, Intel’s CEO, in 2005.
Logically, the timing of the new brand’s emergence could coincide with the launch of the Averill enterprise computing platform, expected in the third quarter of 2006. Averill combines dual-core processing for desktops with Conroe processors, Broadwater chipsets, and 1 Gb/s Ethernet networking.
The Averill system also features Active Management Technology, which supports remote management, and Virtualization Technology, allowing computers to run multiple operating systems in separate partitions.
