The Japanese government, along with high-tech companies and universities, will collaborate to develop a proprietary Internet search technology instead of relying on Google.
According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, this month, a research group consisting of more than 20 domestic companies and universities will convene in Tokyo to outline a common development plan. The initial drafts of the project are expected to be completed around July 2006.
Domestic companies will include renowned electronics firms such as Matsushita Electric Industrial, Hitachi, NEC, Fujitsu, Nippon Telegraph & Telephone (NTT), and NHK.
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the project to develop this Internet search tool will span several years, with a planned start date in April 2007 and a budget in the tens of millions of USD.
