Scientists have discovered that in the brains of habitual liars, the amount of white matter is significantly higher compared to that of normal individuals.
Researchers from the University of Southern California conducted experiments on 49 participants, divided into three groups. The first group consisted of normal individuals without any signs of “pathological lying.” The second group included habitual liars, while the third group comprised patients with behavioral issues.
The researchers performed brain scans and observed the results. It was found that in the brains of liars, the white matter was 22-26% more than that of individuals in groups one and three.
It is known that white matter in the brain is responsible for transmitting information, while gray matter is tasked with processing and synthesizing that information.
The experiment results also indicated that “pathological lying” does not depend on age, background, ethnicity, or any social environment.
“Thus, the observations made in this experiment demonstrate that the cause of ‘pathological lying’ is due to a brain anomaly in certain individuals,” stated Eling Iang, the head of the experiment.
According to them, the “anomaly” refers to the unusually high proportion of white matter in the brains of habitual liars compared to others.
However, some psychologists argue that the ratio of white matter in the brain is only one of the many factors explaining the “condition” of lying in certain individuals.
