Wildlife photographer Andrew Cottrell was walking on the beach at Hunmanby Gap on January 23 when he spotted a pod of approximately 20 bottlenose dolphins.
He mentioned that the dolphins were about a kilometer offshore and “seemed to be having a lot of fun” leaping over the waves.
They were swimming south towards Bempton Cliffs, jumping up to 3m into the air.
Witnessing dolphins leap out of the water to such heights is a rare occurrence in this area.
Mr. Cottrell retired in Filey in October 2022. The photographer stated he chose this area for its “beauty, as well as the world of wildlife and humanity.”
Dolphins are rarely seen off the Yorkshire coast during winter.
