Yury Nosenko, Deputy Director of the Russian Federal Space Agency, recently announced that Russia and China are poised to collaborate on a lunar exploration project in the near future.
On Monday, (October 31), Nosenko revealed that China has formally requested Russia’s cooperation in a project aimed at developing a lunar rover. During the 1960s and 1970s, Russia successfully conducted similar research projects.
In 1970 and 1973, Russia’s Lunakhod rovers traversed the moon, yielding valuable research findings. Nosenko stated that Russia would share its invaluable experiences with China in this exciting collaboration.
Once China completes its necessary research, Russia will officially embark on the lunar exploration program together with China. The lunar rover, developed in partnership between China and Russia, is expected to be launched to the moon via a Russian spacecraft in 2012. Following the rover’s deployment, both countries will collaborate on this project for approximately 5 to 10 years, depending on the rover’s operational lifespan.
The two sides will work together to explore the moon’s geographical and chemical structures, as well as research the potential construction of lunar bases in the future.
