After many years of hard work, Hawking’s masterpiece was completed. In this book, he presented rigorous arguments and scientific predictions about the formation and future of the universe, titled “A Brief History of Time”.
“A Brief History of Time”, published in 1988, created a sensation worldwide, with people rushing to buy it. Many readers were captivated by its content, and the book has been translated into over 30 languages, circulating globally.
Due to his significant contributions, the Royal Society of London elected him as a member. During the ceremony, Hawking sat in his wheelchair and signed his name in the golden book, the first page of which bore the name of the great scientist Newton.
Hawking’s scientific discoveries sent shockwaves through the Vatican. The Vatican is the highest authority of the Church. Over 300 years ago, this very institution banned the research of Galileo, silencing the scientist who steadfastly pursued the truth for life. However, today, the Vatican has shown a remarkable change.
One day, Hawking suddenly received a letter from Rome, and after reading it, he exclaimed with joy: “I can’t believe it, this is incredible!” It was a notification that the Vatican was preparing to award him a medal in recognition of his “Outstanding Achievements as a Young Scientist.” Hawking thought: Perhaps the Vatican feels regret over its actions more than 300 years ago.
He laughed and told his wife: “Maybe I’m reclaiming justice for Galileo!“
Hawking flew to the Vatican, thinking: “If there were more geniuses like Galileo, humanity could unveil the secrets of the universe.”
He continued to ponder: “Although the Vatican’s attitude has changed significantly, it would be beneficial for all humanity if they could reach a conclusion regarding the case from 300 years ago.”
The Vatican held a grand award ceremony, and the atmosphere was incredibly lively. Many young scientists from around the world took turns stepping up to the podium to receive awards presented by the Pope.
Hawking sat still in his wheelchair, and the Pope personally came down to drape the shiny medal around Hawking’s neck, with applause ringing out like thunder. After the award ceremony, the Pope met with the scientists. During their conversation, Hawking smiled and said to the Pope: “Your Holiness, we are deeply moved by your support for science and the award from you and the Vatican. However, in history, there was a period when the Vatican’s stance towards science was not very favorable. May I humbly ask Your Holiness if you could forgive my boldness?”
The Pope laughed and replied: “Go ahead and speak!” Hawking said: “I believe that if Your Holiness were to issue a decree correcting the wrong judgments made in history, it would be beneficial for both the Vatican and the scientific community. What are Your Holiness’s thoughts on this?“
The Pope responded: “I assume you are referring to the Galileo case?”
Hawking replied: “Yes, indeed.”
“We have plans regarding this issue, and when the appropriate opportunity arises, we will make the necessary corrections.”
Hawking joyfully said: “If that happens, all believers and scientists will feel uplifted.”
Not long after, the Vatican issued a statement on this matter. The announcement stated: “More than 300 years ago, the Vatican’s judgment against Galileo was erroneous; Galileo’s scientific discoveries are indeed accurate.”.
“Illness is frightening, but more frightening is the disappointment and despair of the human spirit.“
