The Amazon Rainforest in Brazil is considered the lungs of the Earth. In this forest, logging is always conducted under strict environmental regulations.
The decision on which trees to cut is not random! At the Swiss-funded logging company “Precious Woods“, sustainable forest management practices are being implemented.
This company harvests a yellow-marked section of the forest for one year, only extracting a limited number of trees for timber and then allowing them to recover and grow for 25 years.
“Precious Woods” is the first company to receive a “green certification” from the Brazilian government. However, only 5% of the trees logged in the Amazon benefit from this environmental certification.
Paul Westbrook, the director of “Precious Woods“, stated: “Sustainable forest management is economically beneficial. We have proven this. This method helps generate income for those living around the forest while still preserving it. If we do not adhere to logging rules, the Amazon rainforest could disappear“.
Despite this, every day, satellites monitoring the Amazon report that the rate of illegal deforestation remains high.
According to Brazil’s Minister of the Environment, to prevent indiscriminate logging, in addition to strict legal penalties, sustainable forest management requires the effort of everyone. Last year, 28,000 kilometers of forest were destroyed due to reckless human exploitation.
