Witnessing a giant capybara moving across a golf course left many people in disbelief.
In the clip, a large capybara is seen wandering around the teeing ground of a golf course in Essex County, England.
Those present at the golf course described the animal as being over 1 meter long, resembling a hybrid between a beaver and a bear. Another person who got closer confirmed it was indeed a giant rodent.
“We tried to keep it here, but when we started to approach, the capybara jumped into the river and disappeared,” said Rob Dixon, owner of the nearby Ashlyns Farm Shop.
The capybara is over 1 meter long.
The capybara is a member of the rodent family and is considered the largest rodent species still in existence, originally found in South America. They are capable of living both on land and in water. Upon reaching adulthood, a capybara can weigh over 60 kg, with some individuals even exceeding 100 kg.
They tend to live in groups of up to dozens of individuals. This species primarily feeds on grass, making them less harmful compared to other rodent types.
According to National Geographic, they are “excellent swimmers.” Their webbed feet allow capybaras to move easily in water. Their semi-aquatic lifestyle also helps them escape predators like wild cats, eagles, or anacondas. On land, they possess impressive speed, capable of reaching up to 35 km/h.
