Sony Pictures announced on June 13 that the first films compatible with the Blu-ray disc format will be released on June 20.
These films are compatible with Blu-ray players from Samsung and Sony, including: “50 First Dates“, “The Fifth Element“, “Hitch“, and “House of Flying Daggers“. Similar Blu-ray films will be introduced in the following weeks.
Sony is currently embroiled in a fierce battle between the Blu-ray format, which it supports, and the HD DVD format, backed and developed by rival companies.
While Sony, Samsung, and other supporters of the Blu-ray format are set to release films utilizing this technology, competitor companies are also rolling out films that apply HD DVD technology. However, according to Toshiba, the current number of orders for HD DVD players has only reached 10,000 units.
