In previous years, the number of patents applied for in Vietnam was also extremely low. In 2002, 2003, and 2004, the numbers were 2, 7, and 2, respectively.
Meanwhile, in 2005, China was making significant strides in patent applications. Chinese scientists submitted 2,452 patent applications.
Compared to 2004, the number of applications from China increased by over 43%, elevating the country from 13th to 10th place among countries with the highest number of patents globally.
According to WIPO, in 2005, there were more than 134,000 patent applications across various fields, marking a 9.4% increase from 2004.
The top five countries in patent registrations remained unchanged, namely the United States, Japan, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
Inventors and the industry in the United States submitted 45,111 patent applications, accounting for 33.6% of the total applications in 2005, while Japan ranked second with 18.8%.
Additionally, according to WIPO statistics, this was the second consecutive year that the rate of applications increased significantly from Northeast Asian countries, namely Japan, South Korea, and China, which together accounted for 24.1% of total applications. South Korea contributed 3.5%, while China made up 1.8% of the total patent applications.
Patent applications from some Southeast Asian countries in 2005 were as follows: Brunei: 13, Indonesia: 12, Malaysia: 33, Philippines: 34, Singapore: 438, Thailand: 10.
“The growth rate from Japan, South Korea, and China continues to be remarkable. This reflects the robust development of technological strength in these countries. Since 2000, patent applications from Japan, South Korea, and China have increased by 162%, 200%, and 212%, respectively,” commented Mr. Francis Gurry, Deputy Director-General of WIPO.
The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) serves as the foundation of the international patent system under WIPO.
This treaty has created a fast, flexible, and profitable pathway for the 128 countries that participate in the WIPO system when inventions gain protection rights. Vietnam joined the treaty on March 10, 1993.
