On March 21, 2006, during the signing ceremony and the launch workshop for the Sustainable Livelihood Component within and around marine protected areas (MPA), the Government of Denmark announced a grant of $4.1 million for the component “Sustainable Livelihoods within and around Marine Protected Areas.”
This component will continue to support Vietnam in further developing its network of MPAs based on national legal frameworks and effective local MPA management systems.
It specifically focuses on supporting the sustainable livelihood needs of communities living in and around these MPAs.
The two demonstration protected areas that will continue to receive support from the Government of Denmark are Cu Lao Cham (Quang Nam Province) – a cultural and historical site linked to the formation and development of the ancient trading port city of Hoi An thousands of years ago, and Nha Trang Bay (Khanh Hoa Province), the 29th member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club, which includes the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area – the first marine protected area in Vietnam approved by the Prime Minister.
Additionally, this component will establish a national training center for marine protected areas.
The Sustainable Livelihoods within and around Marine Protected Areas component is one of five components of the Environmental Cooperation Development Program between the Government of Vietnam and the Kingdom of Denmark for the period 2005-2010.
