Hundreds of dead dolphins have washed up on the busy tourist beaches in northern Zanzibar. Scientists speculate that they may have become disoriented or disrupted by the underwater navigation systems of the U.S. Navy.
“All of them are adult dolphins. We couldn’t do anything but take photos of them</em," said a hotel owner.
At this moment, the cause of the mass mortality remains unclear, but experts suggest that the dolphins may have lost their way since they did not die from starvation or poisoning.
In the United States, experts are also investigating the possibility that the underwater navigation systems of U.S. submarines could be linked to a similar incident in Florida in 2005, when 68 whales stranded and died.
A fisheries committee official from Zanzibar stated that the archipelago has never witnessed such a large number of whale deaths.
