In fact, the very idea that sharks lay eggs surprised many of Rebecca’s viewers. Currently, only a few shark species lay eggs for reproduction, as most sharks give birth to live young, meaning the eggs develop inside the mother’s body.
Shark eggs typically are about the size of a hand, varying in color, shape, and texture, depending on the shark species. Not all species lay eggs with unique shapes like the one Rebecca found.
One of the strangest-looking shark eggs is from the droughtboard shark (Cephaloscyllium laticeps). It is orange-yellow with bright tendrils that resemble cake decorations. Then there’s the Australian ghost shark (Callorhinchus milii), which looks like a prop from a science fiction movie, with a dark blue color and ribbed edges.
