The rate of tooth decay in Vietnam is alarming. Patients visiting the dentist to treat 5-6 cavities at once is no longer rare… One of the main reasons for this situation is our lack of knowledge about oral hygiene.
1. Primary teeth do not need care because they will be replaced by permanent teeth
Incorrect. The roots of primary teeth guide the growth of permanent teeth. Therefore, neglecting primary teeth can lead to infections that affect the permanent teeth.
2. Regular tooth scaling will loosen the roots of the teeth
Incorrect. On the contrary, dental scaling helps keep teeth strong, as plaque contains many bacteria. If left untreated, it can cause gum recession, swollen and inflamed gums, and lead to tooth mobility and loss.
3. One should not rinse with saltwater after brushing teeth as it reduces saliva production
Incorrect. Diluted saltwater can provide a mild antiseptic effect in the mouth.
4. Chewing gum frequently will strengthen the teeth
Incorrect. Chewing gum can temporarily help freshen breath and create a pleasant feeling, but it does not strengthen teeth.
5. New mothers should only rinse with saltwater and not brush their teeth immediately after giving birth as it weakens the teeth
Incorrect. Rinsing with saltwater only provides a mild antiseptic effect and does not effectively remove plaque and leftover food debris in the mouth. Therefore, to protect your teeth, it is essential to brush immediately on the first day after giving birth.
