Researchers at the University of Connecticut in the United States are developing a color-changing fabric that adapts to the wearer’s mood or the surrounding environment. The fibers used to create this color-changing fabric are made from a polymer that can change color when an electric current passes through it.
When connected to an electric current, the polymer absorbs light across a range of visible wavelengths. So far, researchers have created fibers that can shift from orange and red to blue.
A control system will help adjust the electric field at various points of the fabric, altering the colors to produce a pattern that aligns with the wearer’s environment.
Additionally, these fabrics can be utilized as sensors in the food technology and security industries. For instance, packaging could change color when an internal sensor detects spoiled or contaminated food.
