According to the park’s press release, the girl, Aspen Brown, made the unexpected discovery of a diamond while celebrating her seventh birthday there.
“Brown was visiting the park with her grandmother and father for her birthday when she stumbled upon a gem the size of a pea on a path in the northeastern part of the park,” a park representative confirmed in the press release.
“The diamond is brown-yellow and sparkles brilliantly. It is a perfect crystal with no broken faces, though there is a small crack on one side formed during the diamond’s creation,” described Waymon Cox, the park’s assistant director.
Cox also added that it is the most beautiful diamond he has seen in recent years.
According to the same press release, the diamond discovered by Brown is the second-largest diamond found by visitors in the park this year.
Previously, a brown diamond weighing 3.29 carats was discovered in March.
Notably, on average, one or two diamonds are found by visitors at Crater of Diamonds State Park each day, and to date, over 75,000 diamonds have been discovered in the park.
The reason so many people accidentally find diamonds while visiting the park is that the area is built on the eroded crater of a volcano covering nearly 150 square meters.
In addition to diamonds, other gemstones such as amethyst and garnet can also be found due to the unique geological structure of the park.
