The Falcon Heavy rocket from Space Exploration Technologies Corp. was launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:04 PM local time on July 28 (which is noon on July 29 in Vietnam), according to Bloomberg.
After approximately three and a half hours, the Falcon Heavy rocket is expected to place the Jupiter 3 satellite into orbit above the Earth.
Weighing over 9 tons and nearly the size of a bus, the satellite will provide wireless Internet connectivity across North and South America.
This satellite will be operated by Hughes Network Systems, a division of the satellite communications company EchoStar Corp.
Elon Musk’s SpaceX company decided not to recover the central core of the Falcon Heavy rocket to ensure it had enough fuel to successfully deliver the massive Jupiter 3 satellite into orbit as planned.
However, the side boosters of the Falcon Heavy successfully landed at SpaceX’s twin landing zones in Florida. These two boosters had also completed two previous missions of the Falcon Heavy rocket.
This marks the third launch of the Falcon Heavy rocket and the 51st mission for SpaceX into orbit in 2023.
Just one day earlier, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket from another of its launch sites in Florida, carrying a batch of new Starlink Internet satellites.
