The Sphere stands at a height of 111 meters and a width of 157 meters, surpassing the Avicii Arena in Sweden. The estimated cost of the project is around $2.3 billion, with the LED facade covering nearly 54,000 square meters. The building features 1.2 million LED units, each containing 48 bulbs. The exterior is fully programmable to display a variety of impressive images, as reported by New Atlas on July 5.
The Sphere can accommodate 17,600 seated guests or 20,000 standing attendees, making it suitable for large concerts or sporting events such as boxing and martial arts. Details about the interior have not been disclosed, except for a massive screen. This 16K x 16K LED screen is located on the ceiling and surrounds the audience, providing an immersive, multi-dimensional experience.
10,000 seats will be equipped with 4D technology, including a haptic feedback system and environmental effects, allowing the audience to feel the breeze, changes in temperature, and even scents. A special camera system will deliver content based on interactive experiences, capable of capturing images at 120 frames per second.
“As part of a special performance to celebrate Independence Day, the entire LED facade of the Sphere, the largest LED screen on Earth, will be illuminated for the first time,” said Sphere Entertainment.
The Sphere was designed by Populous, a global architecture firm known for its work on many of the world’s leading sports arenas. Currently, the Sphere is structurally complete and is expected to open in September with a series of concerts. The company also plans to build a similar structure as part of a project in London, England.
