MSF reported that in addition to the fatalities, approximately 20,000 other individuals have been infected across several provinces. Measures to contain the outbreak have not been adequately implemented.
In a statement made on April 27, MSF warned that the cholera situation in southwestern Angola has escalated beyond control. Just this week, an average of 30 new infections and 1 death occurred every hour.
MSF also urged the Angolan government and international relief organizations to take more action to curb the pandemic.
Many households in Angola are living without adequate water and sanitation systems after millions flocked to cities and towns during the 27-year war, while cholera is a disease that spreads rapidly and extensively, primarily due to the use of unsanitary water sources.
