On May 3rd, the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam announced that American consultant David Krueger has recently concluded a 5-week business trip to Vietnam to provide consultation for Vietnamese veterinary laboratories.
This trip is part of the U.S. assistance program for Vietnam in its efforts to control avian influenza.
During his time in Vietnam, David Krueger, a microbiologist from the University of Wisconsin and a veterinary diagnostic expert, worked with regional laboratories under the Department of Animal Health located in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and Da Nang.
Krueger focused on advising on the proper layout of laboratories and techniques for using Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) analysis methods. This is currently the most modern and effective diagnostic sequence. PCR will significantly enhance testing and diagnostic capabilities, thereby improving Vietnam’s ability to monitor and control avian influenza.
Mr. Krueger also participated in a workshop with Vietnamese laboratory staff to discuss standardizing procedures and improving coordination among the system of nine laboratories under the Vietnamese government.
