The Canadian company Fura Gems discovered this ruby at a mine in Mozambique in July 2022.
The auction house Sotheby’s described this ruby as “extremely rare” and “one of the most valuable and significant” ever brought to market. It is named Estrela de Fura in Portuguese, the official language of Mozambique, meaning “Star of Fura.”
According to CNN, the ruby is considered one of the rarest and most valuable gemstones in the world. The previous auction record for a ruby was held by the Sunrise Ruby, a 25.59-carat ruby found in Myanmar, which sold for $30.3 million in Geneva, Switzerland in 2015.
Sotheby’s described Estrela de Fura as having “superior clarity” and a dark red color known as “pigeon blood.”
Estrela de Fura has been displayed in several cities, including Dubai (UAE), Singapore, and Geneva (Switzerland) before being auctioned in New York.
