Starting today (May 8), Intel will use the brand name “Core 2 Duo” to refer to a new series of laptop and desktop chips.
Intel’s new architecture, codenamed “Core,” integrates two processors on a single chip, delivering higher performance while consuming less power.
“Core 2 Duo” will replace the Pentium 4 brand for desktop chips, while “Core Duo” will be used for laptop chips. The new chips, codenamed “Conroe” for desktops and “Merom” for laptops, are set to be launched in the third quarter of this year.
Intel also announced the name “Core 2 Extreme” for high-speed chips aimed at gaming systems.
According to Intel executives, Conroe will provide over 40% higher performance and consume 40% less energy compared to previous chips. Core 2 Duo is built on a new process that reduces the overall size of the chip. This will allow Intel to embed more transistors on each chip, thereby reducing production costs and enhancing processing performance while saving energy.
