Hitachi Maxell Unveils Innovative Slim DVD Technology
Hitachi Maxell has developed a new DVD technology that simplifies the traditional DVD by making it thinner and more compact.
The new DVD from Hitachi Maxell maintains the same size and shape as a standard DVD. However, it is only 1/13 the thickness of a conventional DVD, measuring approximately 0.092mm. Despite this reduction in thickness, it retains a storage capacity of 4.7GB.
Yet, the new technology from Hitachi Maxell may not be fully practical unless combined into a Stacked Volumetric Optical Disc (SVOD) package, which contains around 100 of these DVDs, resulting in a total thickness of up to 6.5 cm.
This new type of DVD is also double-sided, with each side offering a storage capacity of about 4.7GB, bringing the total to 9.4GB for both sides. Therefore, with 100 discs in the SVOD package, the total capacity reaches an impressive 940GB.
The manufacturer asserts that this new DVD technology can increase total storage capacity to as much as 5 terabytes.
The retail price for each package of 100 new DVDs from Hitachi Maxell will be $325.
