On May 6, Sony officially announced the postponement of the launch date for its dual-layer Blu-ray DVD discs to June.
On the same day, Sony revealed that it has begun supplying single-layer Blu-ray DVD discs with a storage capacity of 25GB.
The decision to delay the release of the dual-layer Blu-ray DVD discs will coincide with Samsung’s launch of the first Blu-ray DVD player, scheduled for June 20.
The single-layer Blu-ray discs will also feature Sony’s proprietary AccuCORE technology, which provides protection against scratches, damage, humidity, and ensures more stable data recording.
Single-use Blu-ray discs (BD-R) with a capacity of 25GB and rewritable Blu-ray discs (BD-RE) of the same capacity will be priced at $20 and $25, respectively. The 50GB BD-R and BD-RE discs will be priced at $48 and $60.
Sony’s Blu-ray disc line will support recording speeds of 2x and data transfer rates of up to 72Mbps.
