On May 10th, in Ho Chi Minh City, a delegation from the Shizuoka City Council in Japan officially presented a symbolic animal collection to the Saigon Zoo. This marks the first time Japan has donated such a collection to Vietnam.
The collection consists of 15 animals from 6 different species: lions, brown bears, zebras, kangaroos, llamas (a ruminant animal native to South America, standing 0.9-1.3 meters tall), and sea lions. Most of these species originate from Africa, Europe, and South America.
As of now, the Saigon Zoo has increased its animal population to approximately 900 animals across 120 species. The addition of these new animals aims to enrich the zoo’s collection, enhance species diversity, improve breeding programs, and contribute positively to conservation education while attracting more visitors. These animals are expected to be on display by the end of this year.
