Australian researchers are developing a computer system that can monitor the condition of miners and alert managers when they show signs of fatigue.
The system is designed to enhance safety for operators of underground mining carts.
The system utilizes sensors attached to the mining carts to analyze data collected during the pushing of the carts, such as whether the worker is pushing the cart in a straight line and their speed. The sensors will also track the position of the carts on the track and detect nearby vehicles or equipment.
“The software will analyze the miner’s condition throughout their shift and determine if there are any hazards to alert them accordingly.”
Worrell noted that this technology is particularly suited for the underground mining environment, which is enclosed, but it is also being considered for application in train operators’ settings.
