IBM researchers have announced a new data embedding method that will be capable of storing the information equivalent to 8 million books in a storage unit the size of half a VHS tape.
Scientists at IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California, plan to design an 8 terabyte (TB) tape, which has a storage density 15 to 20 times greater than current standard magnetic tape technology.
IBM is collaborating with Fujitsu to change the materials used in tape production and to improve data reading and writing methods. However, customers will have to wait another five years to enjoy this new technology.
High-capacity hard drives that operate reliably have become popular, but magnetic tape remains a common medium for storing documents that do not require frequent access, such as financial records. IBM began selling magnetic tape storage products in 1952, and their revenue in this sector increased by 9% last year.
