This May seems to be heating up with a slew of new storage devices hitting the market. Hitachi and SanDisk have entered the fray.
Unlike Seagate, which is known for surprising capacities, the Japanese manufacturer Hitachi attracts users with its highly reliable products that utilize the most advanced technology.
The new Travelstar 5K160 hard drive spins at 5400 RPM, has a maximum write speed of 540 MB/s, and offers a capacity of 160GB, specifically designed for laptops with enhanced corrosion resistance. The PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording) technology allows for more accurate data recording, and the iridium-manganese-chromium (IrMnCr) material promises to double the drive’s reliability.
Additionally, Hitachi also offers hard drives with similar technology but smaller capacities (40-120GB) to provide users with more choices.
The portable device market also welcomes a new storage product: the SanDisk RapidGX, a specialized memory card for the PSP (PlayStation Portable), recently introduced by SanDisk at the E3 Expo.
The RapidGX has a capacity of 1GB and comes bundled with software that allows users to easily transfer data between their computer and the PSP through a drag-and-drop interface. SanDisk has also released a new Memory Stick PRO Duo card reader, which accelerates the data transfer speed of RapidGX to its maximum (approximately 15MB/s). The PRO Duo connects to computers via USB like other card readers.
Although it has garnered attention, this product line comes at a steep price: $84.99 for the RapidGX and $40.00 for the PRO Duo.
