On May 22, nine individuals in the southern city of Guangzhou, China, died after receiving an injection of a counterfeit drug produced by Qiqihar Pharmaceutical Company No. 2 from Heilongjiang Province. Fourteen officials from this company are currently being interrogated.
The victims died after being administered a fake drug named Armillarisni A, which is intended for the treatment of patients suffering from gallbladder, liver, and stomach disorders, manufactured by Qiqihar Pharmaceutical Company No. 2 from Heilongjiang Province, China.
The police have detained five of the fourteen officials from the company to investigate their involvement.
In recent years, the market for counterfeit and substandard products has claimed many lives in China.
Notably, in 2004, a health scandal in China resulted in the deaths of 13 malnourished children in the rural eastern region of Anhui after they were fed a fake milk formula intended for infants.
