The Qondesa Building, standing over 130 meters tall, is set to become the tallest structure in Quito, featuring a façade inspired by vines.
The Chinese architecture firm MAD Architects has unveiled the design for the Qondesa Building in Quito, Ecuador, characterized by its unique curvilinear shape that allows natural light and views of surrounding buildings, as reported by New Atlas on May 5th. Qondesa marks MAD Architects’ first project in South America to date.

The exact height of Qondesa has not yet been disclosed, but MAD Architects has stated that it will be the tallest building in Quito. Thus, the new structure will surpass Iqon, currently the tallest building in the city at 130 meters. MAD Architects has not announced the expected completion timeline for the new project.
The stone-colored façade of Qondesa evokes the Old Town of Quito, known for its many historic buildings constructed from local volcanic stone. The façade is also intended to evoke images of vines wrapping around the building and reaching the top.
While Qondesa will partially block light from neighboring buildings, its curvilinear design represents a significant advancement over standard rectangular skyscrapers. The new building will also feature numerous planters on the balconies and a rooftop garden to create a refreshing green space.
Qondesa is a green design consisting of multiple urban apartments and is connected to key destinations in Quito via the nearby Iñaquito subway station. Therefore, it is an ideal living location for city residents, according to MAD Architects. Additionally, the project is situated opposite La Carolina Park, a vast 67-hectare green space in the city center that integrates residential, commercial, and recreational elements.
