New Parachuting System Allows Jumps from 200 km Away (Source: ABC) |
A new military parachute system equipped with wings on the back will enable parachutists to glide up to 200 kilometers from their drop zone. This advancement allows military aircraft to deploy troops into target areas without needing to fly too close to dangerous zones.
The new wings are made from carbon fiber and were developed by the German company Elektroniksystem und Logistik and Draeger. The project is set to conclude by the end of this year, with a complete parachute integrated with the wings expected to be launched in 2007.
Peter Felstead, editor of Jane’s Defence Weekly, the publication reporting this news, stated that this parachute system has been in use by the German military since 2003. However, he noted that the development of the new wings will allow soldiers to travel much farther than the current flight range of 48 kilometers.
“The new wings will also reduce wind impact on the parachutist and allow special forces to glide up to 40 kilometers while carrying loads of approximately 100 kilograms</em," Felstead said.
“This system is noted for being 100% silent and very difficult to detect by ground or aerial radar systems.”
