The new Netflix documentary is sparking significant controversy.
On May 10, Netflix will release a documentary about Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. While the content remains unclear, Netflix has already faced a deluge of criticism over its casting choices.
Traditionally, audiences are familiar with the image of a white Queen Cleopatra. However, in this documentary, Netflix has cast a woman of color to portray her. Additionally, the film’s trailer includes a statement:
“It doesn’t matter what they teach kids in school, Cleopatra was a woman of color.”

This has left many viewers feeling unsettled. They argue that since Queen Cleopatra had Greek origins, changing the skin color of this historical figure is simply not plausible. Here are some notable comments:
A documentary should strive to be as true to reality as possible, right? Cleopatra was Greek, so it’s understandable that there would be backlash for portraying her like this.
If a white actress were cast, the film wouldn’t receive any attention. They have to create a character of color to attract public interest. Filmmakers intentionally do this, so the best course of action is to ignore it.
First it was the black mermaid, and now Queen Cleopatra is being portrayed as black too. It’s ridiculous.
Archaeologists and genetic scientists, please weigh in.
It seems like every film nowadays sparks debates about skin color. Personally, I support the opinions of the public. If it’s a documentary, beyond conveying content, filmmakers also need to pay attention to visual accuracy.
