On World Environment Day (June 5) and in support of the International Year of the Sea Turtle, a series of sea turtle conservation activities were organized in Nha Trang city by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Ministry of Fisheries, the People’s Committee of Khanh Hoa Province, the Institute of Oceanography, and the Nha Trang Marine Protected Area Management Board, with the participation of numerous officials, youth, and students.
IUCN chose Khanh Hoa as the venue for this event because the waters of Vietnam, particularly Nha Trang, are home to numerous rare sea turtle species such as the leatherback, hawksbill, olive ridley, and green turtles, which are favored by tourists.
Moreover, Vietnam has been one of the countries with a Sea Turtle Conservation Action Plan since 2004. This plan aims to address several goals: minimizing the causes of sea turtle mortality; managing nesting sites and egg incubation areas; conducting research to protect and manage sea turtle habitats…
During the celebration of World Environment Day and in support of the International Year of the Sea Turtle this year, students and youth in Nha Trang participated in beach clean-up activities, contributing to restoring a clean living environment for sea turtles. They also visited the Marine Life Museum at the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang to learn about various aquatic species.
At the conclusion of the celebration, the students had the opportunity to release several tagged sea turtles back into the ocean.
