The publishing house La Martiniere is suing the technology giant Google for “falsification and infringement of intellectual property rights” after the company uploaded excerpts from 100 of its books without permission. La Martiniere is seeking compensation of 100,000 euros for each book used unlawfully.
“To achieve a favorable outcome in this lawsuit, we have requested that Google pay 100,000 euros for each infringement detected and for each day of delay.
This means that if Google violates the injunction issued by the court at the end of the lawsuit process, they will face significant penalties,” said Yann Colin, the lawyer representing La Martiniere.
The case will be tried in Paris, involving both Google France and its parent company, Google LLC in the United States.
Google has previously faced criticism from various organizations, including the Association of American University Presses, which represents 125 nonprofit academic publishers.
